CLEARWATER, FLA. Tech Data Corporation today announced record sales and earnings for the third quarter ended October 31, 1998. Sales in the third quarter increased 62.2% to $3.28 billion from $2.02 billion for the comparable quarter last year. Net income for the third quarter increased 44.0% to $34.1 million, or $.63 per diluted share, up from $23.7 million, or $.51 per diluted share in the third quarter last year. The results include a full quarter of operations for the company's Munich, Germany-based subsidiary, Computer 2000 AG, in which the company acquired a controlling interest in July 1998, and excludes the results for the company's former German subsidiary, Macrotron AG, which was sold in July 1998.

Sales for the first nine months of fiscal 1999 increased 55.3% to $7.68 billion, compared with $4.94 billion in the same period last year. Net income for the nine-month period this year increased 45.9% to $92.5 million, or $1.79 per diluted share. Excluding the gain on the sale of Macrotron, net income for the nine months ended October 31, 1998 totaled $84.8 million, or $1.64 per diluted share, compared with $63.4 million, or $1.39 per diluted share, in the same period last year.

The company experienced strong third quarter sales in all product divisions, led by the systems division which increased 79% over the comparable period last year. Networking, software and peripherals sales grew 59%, 57% and 56%, respectively. International business accounted for approximately 50% of sales during the third quarter this year, compared with 23% in the same period last year.

Tech Data recently increased its controlling interest in Computer 2000 to 96% and is in the process of a tender offer for the remaining shares of common stock. In addition to its international expansion, Tech Data continued to improve efficiency through enhanced services including its pioneering FactoryDirect program, which today enables shipping of Compaq and IBM products directly from these industry leaders' own domestic manufacturing facilities. To meet the needs of resellers who prefer nonbranded systems, Tech Data also launched a comprehensive initiative to build these solutions from components based on customer specifications. Industry studies show that 30% to 40% of all systems sold today are in the nonbranded, or "white box," category.
